Collection of Midnight Star

The synth-funk unit Midnight Star scored several times on the charts during the mid-'80s, led by their double-platinum album No Parking on the Dance Floor in 1983. Just one of the successful acts on Solar Records (also including Shalamar, Lakeside, and the Whispers), the group was formed in 1976 at Kentucky State University by the Calloway brothers, trumpeter Reginald, and trombone player Vincent, with vocalist Belinda Lipscomb. After signing with RCA near the turn of the decade, Midnight Star recorded their first album in 1980, The Beginning, with a conglomeration of studio players and producers. After moving to the Solar label by 1982, the group released Victory and then added a full band: guitarist Melvin Gentry, bassist Kenneth Gant, drummer Bobby Lovelace, and keyboard player Bo Watson.

Though the Calloways' production skills -- later used to full effect on tracks by Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight, and Teddy Pendergrass -- had pushed Midnight Star into the R&B charts during 1981-1982, with singles like "Hot Spot" and "I've Been Watching You," the group was unprepared for the success of the first single from their third proper album, No Parking on the Dance Floor. "Freak-a-Zoid" hit number two on the R&B charts in mid-1983, and though it failed to make the pop Top 40, it pushed the LP over the platinum mark. "Operator," the first single from their next album, Planetary Invasion, became their highest-charting single, making number 18 on the pop charts. By 1986, Headlines had become Midnight Star's third album to at least sell gold, but it proved their last; both Reginald and Vincent left the group to form Calloway in 1988. (Incidentally, the Calloways had introduced future legend Babyface to Solar executives for his first job, and produced Babyface's group the Deele).

Without Reginald and Vincent Calloway to lead the way, Midnight Star fell fast and far. A 1988 self-titled album flopped, and 1990's Work It Out proved to be their last until 2002's 15th Avenue. Since then, the members continued outside collaborations, but they also came together for frequent touring. As late as 2007, the group's lineup featured Lipscomb, Gentry, Watson, Lovelace, and Gant. As Calloway, the Calloways found success with their first single, 1989's "I Wanna Be Rich," which hit number two on the pop charts. The track was their only major hit, followed by "Sir Lancelot" and the title track from their 1990 debut album, All the Way. Calloway returned two years later with Let's Get Smooth, but the album proved their last. The brothers continued working, with Pieces of a Dream and Bootsy Collins, among others. René & Angela are an early-'80s soul duo from Los Angeles. Before forming in 1977, René Moore -- the brother of Rufus' Bobby Watson -- played with the Brothers Johnson; Angela Winbush had sung backup vocals for Dolly Parton, Lenny Williams, and Jean Carn. René & Angela had their first R&B hit for Capitol Records in 1980 and proceeded to have seven other hits over the next three years. In 1985, the duo switched to Mercury, where they had the number one R&B hit "Save Your Love (For #1)" with their first single from the album Street Called Desire. Over the next year, the group had three other Top Ten hits -- including the number one R&B single "Your Smile" and the number two "You Don't Have to Cry" -- before pursuing solo careers in the mid-'80s. The Fatback Band

Collection of The Fatback Band

A seminal funk ensemble, the Fatback Band made many great singles through the '70s and early '80s, ranging from humorous novelty tunes to energetic dance vehicles and even occasional political/message tracks. The original lineup featured drummer Bill Curtis, trumpeter George Williams, guitarist Johnny King, bassist Johnny Flippin, saxophonist Earl Shelton, and flutist George Adam. Synthesizer player Gerry Thomas, saxophonist Fred Demerey, and guitarist George Victory were integral parts of the group during their peak years. They began recording for Perception in the early '70s, and had moderate luck with "Street Dance" in 1973. They moved to Event in 1974, and while funk audiences loved such songs as "Wicki-Wacky" and "(Are You Ready) Do the Bus Stop," they didn't generate much sales action. Their first sizable hit was "Spanish Hustle" in 1976, which reached number 12 on the R&B charts. They shortened their name to Fatback in 1977, and landed their first Top Ten R&B hit with "I Like Girls" in 1978. Their 1979 single "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" is widely considered the first rap single in many circles. But their biggest year was 1980. They scored two Top Ten R&B hits with "Gotta Get My Hands on Some (Money)" and "Backstrokin'," their finest tune. Fatback kept going through the mid-'80s, landing one more Top 20 hit with "Take It Any Way You Can Want It" in 1981. They were backed by the female vocal trio Wild Sugar in 1981-82, and Evelyn Thomas also provided the lead vocal for "Spread Love" in 1985, their last song for Spring. Fatback also recorded a pair of LPs for Cotillion in 1984 and 1985.

Juicy was the brother and sister duo of Jerry and Katreese Barnes who had a Top 20 R&B hit with "Sugar Free." After having releases on Arista -- Love's a Merry-Go-Round (early 1983) -- and Atlantic -- Beat Street Strut from the movie Beat Street (summer 1984) -- they signed with CBS-distributed Private I Records. After the singles -- "Bad Boy, "It Takes Two -- Juicy finally hit the big time with "Sugar Free." "Sugar Free" sounded a lot like Mtume's number one R&B gold single "Juicy Fruit." It all added up to sweet success for the Barnes', as "Sugar Free" went to number 13 R&B in early 1986. The duo had one other charting single, "Nobody but You, which hit number 59 R&B in spring of 1986 on the CBS associated label. 52nd Street was a vocal group from Manchester, England, who had a 1986 Top Ten R&B hit with "Tell Me How It Feels." The lineup was John Dennison, Diane Charlemagne, Tony Bowry, and Rony Henry. They were part of the mid-'80s British soul music invasion that included Junior, Loose Ends, Five Star, and Soul II Soul. The group recorded for the same label as Loose Ends, MCA Records, shared the same producer, Nick Martinelli, and to some extent the same sound. "Tell Me How It Feels" made it to number eight R&B on Billboard's chart in spring 1986. The single was on their LP Children of the Night, which included the whimsical "Never Give Up on You," the jazzy, loping radio-aired title track -- not to be confused with the same-named classic by the Stylistics; "Look I've Heard," an ode to self-centered teenagers; the jaunty "I Can't Let You Go"; the slammin' "Let's Celebrate"; and the follow-up single "You're My Last Chance." Their second LP, 1987's Something's Going On, yielded the charting single "I'll Return." Allmusic by Ed Hogan

R. J.'s Latest Arrival was a R&B, dance, and soul music band from Detroit, Michigan who formed in the late 1970s and reached the peak of their popularity in the mid-1980s. They released their self-titled debut album in 1979 (this debut would be the first of three eponymous albums the group released throughout their career, with a second one following in 1982, and a third in 1985). Their biggest hit came with the 1984 single "Shackles," off their Harmony album from the same year, which fused R. J.'s raps and DeDe's soulful vocals. Rudy Famous left the band during The Shackles Tour 1984 and was featured in the follow up video "Harmony." The group would score another big hit in 1985 with the single "Heaven In Your Arms." They continued to score moderate hits on the R&B chart throughout the 1980s. The group later became more based in traditional R&B and Soul music and broke up in the late 1990s.

R. J. (Ralph J.) Rice went on to form Barak Records, an independent hip-hop label based in Detroit; the labels most notable act is Slum Village.

Paul "Fingers" Munro continued in the entertainment business creating Entertainment/Record company "Zycron Media","Zycron Records", creating/producing/hosting "HOTSPOTS" television show airing on NBC and CBS affiliates also producing international hit recording artist.
